How to Play Walls.gg

Everything you need to know in two minutes.

The board

Nine squares wide, nine squares deep. Player 1 starts in the middle of the bottom row. Player 2 starts in the middle of the top row. Each side starts the game with ten walls.

9 ร— 9 grid ยท two pawns ยท ten walls each

Your turn

On every turn, do exactly one of two things:

  1. Move one square โ€” up, down, left or right. You cannot step onto your opponent or through a wall, and you cannot leave the board.
  2. Place a wall โ€” choose a slot between two squares. The wall stays for the rest of the game. You can place a horizontal wall between two stacked squares or a vertical wall between two side-by-side squares.

Wall rules

  • Walls cannot overlap or cross another wall.
  • Walls cannot extend off the edge of the board.
  • Walls cannot completely seal a player off โ€” both pawns must always have at least one path to their goal row. The game checks this with breadth-first search before confirming any placement.
  • If a placement would leave either side without a path, it is illegal and you have to pick a different action.

Winning

As soon as your pawn steps onto your goal row โ€” top for Player 1, bottom for Player 2 โ€” you win. The game ends immediately.

Modes

Quick tip

Don't spend walls before you have to. Movement is cheap; a wall is gone forever. Most beginners lose because they used all ten walls in the first half of the game and had nothing left to defend with.
